In this time of uncertainty, it’s hard to know where we can go from here. What sources should we trust? Are we getting the complete data for this pandemic?
We were hoping that after more than a month of “sheltering in place”, things would be starting to get back to normal. However, it looks like the situation is still up in the air. Every county and state is handling this differently.
One thing we do know is that the current pandemic has a lower death toll than previously estimated and we should use this as a learning opportunity to improve our preparedness. Since I am not a Doctor and I am still early on in my training for Epidemiology, I have turned to the experts for their perspective on this global health issue.
All lives are important!
We have loved ones in all categories of risk. Spanning from young children whose immune systems can tackle almost anything, to elderly with per-existing conditions. The question is how do we handle this current crisis while not ignoring the societal impact this has on our nation?
Out of all the experts we have been following, Dr. David Katz provides a great middle-ground to talk about this topic. He is a Physician and an Epidemiologist who has had the opportunity to serve on the front lines in the Bronx during this pandemic. Dr. Katz is calling for a more “surgical like strategy” in which we focus our efforts towards those in the highest risk category. He is also presenting his plan for total harm minimization to the Senate as a way to safely and methodically open the country up again.
