Wow the markets have been on a crazy ride over the last 2 months! This feels like a good time to talk about what is causing many people stress right now: Money.
We all strive to acquire this resource. We all crave more of it, and throughout history many have killed for it. It means many things to many people. But what is this stuff really?
Money can be a bargaining tool, it can increase power/influence, or it can simply make life easier. Most of us receive money through our job or a business we’ve created, but many of us don’t talk about how much it means to us.
Money is a powerful tool, and the best thing it can buy us is our freedom. This can mean different things to different people. To some it can mean sitting on a beach somewhere with a cold drink in hand, while to others it can mean spending more time with family and friends. For us this is having the freedom to work on projects that inspire us, without having to work just to earn money.
Find your way around:
Then what is this stuff we call Money???
According to Vicki Robins in the book You’re Money or You’re Life, “Money is what you trade your life energy for. It is what you trade the hours of your life for.” (YMoYL)
Huh? But I can always make more money, because I have more time right?
We often act as if time is infinite and money is scarce. This equation is flipped. In reality, time that is scarce, and money is infinite. Money is infinite in that you can always earn more money, but you cannot get back the time that has passed. When we need more money we can leverage our skills to work for someone or ourselves, and earn more money through services provided to the marketplace.
What???
We each have around 28,835 days in our lifetime. The number gets smaller because most of those hours are used on basic body maintenance. If you are 30 years or older, you have about 17,000 days left, and if you are 50 years old, you have a little over 14,000 days left… Sobering thought right?
Time is all we really have...
The point with all this is that money equals the hours of your life you are willing to trade for it. This is a powerful thought, as it allows each of us to control how we spend our precious life hours. With this in mind, we can make more conscious choices with how we spend our time and our money.
